The long awaited iEDGE DS, compatible with the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DSi XL, and Nintendo DSi LL, was officially released on the 9th of January 2010. It is the replacement for and successor to the original EDGE DS card, which was arguably the most reliable DS gaming cartridge ever made.
The official iEDGE DS specifications include the following:
* Supports DSi/DSL/DS
* iEDGE comes blank without any copyrighted software, making it 100% LEGAL * Fully upgrade-able bootstrap to combat future DSi firmware updates
* Supports DSi firmware v1.4+
* Plays commercial NDS ROM
* Plays homebrew NDS ROMS
* Frequently updated OS for best compatibility
* In game reset
* Full download play support
* Automatic ROM protection patcher
* SlowMotion mode
* Save game saves directly to Micro SD
* Automatic save game type detection
* Supports MicroSDHC cards up to 32GB
* Multimedia playback such as movies and MP3's
* Action Replay compatible cheat system
* Multi language user interface
* Micro SDHC card reader included
The iEDGE DS comes in a triangular box with a swivel cover. The box is designed to look particularly appealing as a gift. An elastic band covers the swivel cover to hold it in place. This looks exactly like the original EDGE DS. When asked, the iEDGE team commented, "There is no sense in changing what is a winning formula with the original card," referring to the original EDGE DS and the similarities between the old and new card.
The only other aesthetic difference between the original EDGE and iEDGE is that the original has a plain colour throughout while the DSi / DSi XL / DSi LL compatible one has a blue gradient on the sticker. Both cartridges can come in either black or white.
The iEDGE DS needs to be updated in order to play on DSi consoles with firmware series 1.4 or greater. Some reputable and reliable stores will ship the cartridges pre-flashed, but many will not - so playing the cartridges on a 1.4 or later DSi would result in the following error message:
"An error has occured. Press and hold the Power Button to turn the system off. Please see the Nintendo DSi Operations Manual for help troubleshooting."
Users can download the firmware and instructions for setting up the card from the official iEDGE website, or download pre-flashed firmware from NDS-Gear.
